Swift, in full Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, U.S. satellite observatory designed to swing into the proper orientation to catch the first few seconds of gamma-ray bursts.It was launched on November 20, 2004.



The first instrument to detect radio waves from space was built by Karl Jansky in 1932.









Unfortunately the observatory never had a telescope until the Swift telescope was purchased and installed in 1942, where astronomy students up until a few years ago used it.



The Swift Gamma Ray Burst Explorer will be launched in 2003 to observe hundreds of gamma ray bursts per year and study their X-ray and optical afterglows, using a multiwavelength complement of three instruments: a wide-field Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), an X-Ray Telescope (XRT), and a UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT). Space telescopes were proposed as early as 1923. The XRT is designed to study X-ray counterparts of the gamma ray bursts and their afterglows, beginning 20--70 s from the time of the burst, and continuing for days or weeks.

So he built the 200-inch (5.1-m) Hale telescope southeast of Los Angeles on Palomar Mountain.

In many cases, the decaying X-ray afterglow joins smoothly to X-ray burst intensities observed during theburst.
