To believe Sheeran is to believe: (i) Sheeran killed Hoffa; (ii) the mob assassinated JFK; (iii) the mob threw the 1960 election to JFK by vote fraud in Illinois; (iv) JFK's motive in Bay of Pigs was payback to organized crime to recoup lost assets in Cuba; (v) Joe Kennedy maintained his mob ties his entire life and implied to crime figures that he could "control" his sons JFK and Bobby; (vi) Jimmy Hoffa ordered many violent illegal activities including murder; (vii) the mob made cash bribes to John Mitchell - Nixon's attorney general; (viii) Mitchell actually accepted one such bribe at the front door of his own home. There was, and it did.

May 24th 2005 Great book, great read. To be fair, there’s not much that was left from the movie in the end- it was a great account of, well, a great account. Perhaps the author himself bonded with Sheeran.

This is a fascinating character study of a loyal and cold-blooded man who, through his connections, became very powerful. Although it is sort of a 'death bed confession' from Frank Sheeran about his life to Brandt, it becomes more tied in to Hoffa's disappearance and activities with regards to the Teamsters union and their links to organised crime (Russell Bufalino) in the US at that time. The paint is the blood that splatters on the walls and floors.

Left many unanswered questions. When Bufalino ordered Sheeran to kill Hoffa, he did the deed, knowing that if he had refused he would have been killed himself.

Two key interests a reader should have to enjoy this book immensely are appreciation of history and a curiosity for criminal stories and organized crime. The attempts to describe certain people as good and foster pity for Hoffa and Sheeran are a bit weak. This book was really well done and it drops some major bombshells.

Ultimately, this is what left me torn about how to rate "I Heard You Paint Houses".

I subsequently read several pieces in credible outlets like the NY Review of Books by those far more familiar with the Hoffa case and there were enough questions about the veracity of Sheeran's account and motivations that left me a bit unsure.

Sheeran came across as a good soldier where he learned his 'trade' but was not a good family man. Firstly the writing style put me of, as it is taken from taped interviews with Frank Sheeran and put like that on pages and then interspersed with small pieces of facts the author put in.
