orvis recon vs helios 3
Casting the two rods, they feel very similar. I think it casts great and feels good in the hand. I now own 4 H2s and fish them all the time. We took it out on the water to give it a run for its money.
I’ve only had the chance to cast the 8wt H3 and I found there to be nothing special about it, I even preferred the H2. Geez.I agree with Jim 100 percent.Looks do matter when someone is considering laying down nearly $900 bucks for a rod.I too am a loyal orvis customer but these H3s are simply awful, from an aethestics perspective..THey should have made the the label either green or blue depending on the model.IT would have looked much better than than the white label on a matte black blank. For $900 the rod should be beautiful, not a walking billboard for Orvis. When it came to rod action and performance, I guess I always thought of Orvis as a little old-fashioned. Just wondering which version might be the best one for me, and I've been following your posts for a while and tend to have similar opinions on rods...Hi David - sorry for the confusion - the video you're referring to is the 5-weight version where I do prefer the 3D.Hi Nathaniel - the F is very line friendly. What Orvis is offering you is a rod that cats as well as most of those $750 rods for $425. The H2 is better in my opinion, but not by much.
The Recon is a very stiff rod and if it’s the 6wt you have it will act more like a 7wt and won’t give you the most delicate casts for a dry. If you're wondering which fly rods are the best for fishing streamers, we've covered that topic in a different post. A fast powerful action, light weight, beautiful finish and sweet hardware. recommendation as F or D would be truly appreciated. I’m a little reminded of Hank Patterson’s review of the new nippers… “who made your nippers?” “Oh yeah, ORVIS!” (in case you forget?) (FYI, I have made many rods and understand the process.) Easy to remove later when you decide to sell it.I love the H1 and H2 and am certain I will also love the H3… but damned that is an ugly rod. I don’t have any spare rods at the moment, so it looks like I am out of my planned fishing trip.
They catch your fly line a lot at least they do it to me plus I use long leaders tapered to tippet,s of 6 or 8 pound test,so using leaders 13 to 15 feet when I am finished I do not like attaching the hook anywhere that leaves my butt section of leader through my tip guide, this put,s memory in the butt section of mono,I make sure when my fly is attached to the first or second guide that my fly line is through the tip eye,it leave,s a little memory but is soon gone when you start fishing again.I just received my Helious 3F today in the mail,I like the look of this Rod but not the white flag but I can live with that if it cast,s as well as they say,my latest Rod from Orvis is my Hydro,s rods,I have a 6 wt and a 9 wt,if people didn,t know, ths is the original Helios blank with lesser jewellery on it,it cast,s beautiful.
It only feels like a bargain when you’re paying for it.I have the 9′ 5 weight. There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything."

Standing out in a crowd of fly rods can be tough. Orvis designed the new fast-action Recon to fit in between the Helios 3F and 3D — basically, it’s intended to have more power than the 3F but more feel than the 3D. Most guys liked the Clearwater over the Helios. The Orvis Helios 3 They Blinded Me With Science. The blank is “Shadow Green” with chestnut wraps, the hardware is black nickel silver and the guides are chrome.
The idea behind the H3 design is evident. They’ve done so in a big way with the new Orvis Helios 3 fly rod. use would be off the beach in jupiter fl and maybe 2 trips yearly to the bahamas. What I can say is that it’s a nice improvement over the Helios 2 across the board, and especially at longer distances. It looks like the rod that can do it all is the Recon. Trust me,Orvis has treated me very well over the year,s. At this price, quality control should be bullet proof. 8 WT. It might, in fact. It demands your attention and it is far from traditional. The feel of the rod is great. I’m of the opinion that a decent rod in the hands of a good caster will put the fly where the caster wants it. I couldn’t agree with you more about this rod Louis Cahill.
